Cases Settled in Mississippi
Another fen-phen lawsuit against American Home Products Corp. has been settled in Mississippi. Plaintiffs were awarded approximately $200 million for damages related to the diet drug fen-phen. An earlier case in 1999 resulted in a settlement of $400 million. Fen-phen, a combination of Pondimin (fenfluramine), phentermine, and Redux (dexfenfluramine), has been linked to heart valve damage and was pulled from the market in 1997. Several thousand cases have been filed against American Home Products since that time.

Effects of Fen-Phen Studied
New research indicates that fen-phen had very little effect on the hearts of users who took the drug combination for less than six months. In addition, researchers have discovered that the risk of heart valve damage for patients who took fen-phen for more than six months was very low. Scientists from Duke University studied 1,200 people who took the drug for more than six months and found that some patients seemed to be more out of breath than others. The researchers have also speculated that the effects of fen-phen may be wearing off with the passage of time.
